How Free are You?

“We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” – Victor Frankl

I live in a “free” country. I have certain “rights,” described as unalienable in my country’s Declaration of Independence. I and my fellow Americans are free to choose most of our own circumstances and we are not alone in the world in possessing this most important right. Certainly almost anyone reading this post also possesses that right.

It allows us to make choices about where we live, where we work, how we spend our free time, and our money.

Most of us have always had that right, we’ve known nothing but freedom our entire lives. As a result, we tend to take our freedom for granted, even that last of the human freedoms that Victor Frankl spoke about.

In fact, that “last” of the human freedoms is often the very first one we give up. We let other people, other things, and events beyond our control have a negative effect on our attitude. We don’t even stop for a moment to realize that our attitude is a choice, it’s our choice. It’s a choice we have the opportunity to make many times a day and sadly, we don’t make it.

We actually don’t even have to be free to make that choice, no matter our circumstances we still have that choice. We have that choice right up to our final breath.

So, are you free enough do decide for yourself what your attitude will be? You are if you decide you are.

Don’t give up that freedom, choose positive. Virtually everything you say and do is easier when you decide to do it with a positive attitude. Virtually everything you say and do will be better when you do it with a positive attitude.

Virtually everything in your life changes for the better when you decide to exercise your freedom and maintain control over your own attitude.

If you really want to be free I’d suggest that you start right there.

All News is Good News!

I keep hearing about all the bad news on TV and in the newspaper. I’m a little stumped by that characterization. How can news be bad? I’m pretty sure that while the reports might be about tough times or difficult conditions the news is never bad. It is simply informative, nothing more nothing less.

What can be bad is how we respond to it. Yes, the media is very helpful in making certain we respond to their “information” in a negative way. There clearly has been a “sky is falling” mentality around for a long while now and most of the 24 hours news outlets continue to offer us a fresh helping of gloom each day.

While we don’t have input into what they report, we do have a choice in how we respond. We can choose to take the information provided and use it to be more empathic to those immediately affected. We can change our own plans as a result of economic conditions or predictions. We can listen and then decide for ourselves how much we will let the “news” impact our lives and our circumstances.

We can use the news as a learning tool to understand the challenges our countries face and the challenges our companies face as well. We must use the news to adjust our plans and likely our goals along with them.

Obviously, pure optimism or positive thinking, without a well thought-out plan of action, is not the way to go. Instead, we need to focus on what is possible and then move forward with a clear strategy for success.

We can’t let “the news” cause us to plan for failure. Progress, profitability, and prosperity remain our only options and they are just as available to us today as they were in the past.

Success is all around today, though it is sometimes well hidden in news stories about failure, corruption, and despair, it is there nonetheless. All you need to do is be open to finding it and looking a little harder and longer than normal.

Your Most Important Decision of the Day

If you’re like me, if you’re human, if you have a pulse, then you make lots of decisions everyday. Most of them are tiny decisions, made with barely a conscious thought. Brand of gum to chew, water with lemon or lime, which color of socks should I wear today. Those are easy (I hope) decisions and they have little or no lasting impact on your future.

Some are more consequential, they shape your future and you likely give them a fair amount of thought.

Some are downright huge! The have long-range of even life long impact on your life. You do research, fact check, ask others for advice and struggle to be sure of your decision.

But one, one decision is the biggest of all. It is positively monumental!

It’s a decision you should be making everyday. In fact, it might be wise to make it several times a day. Yet most people never make it at all. Many people don’t even realize it’s a decision that is available for them to make. You may be one of them.

So, what is this monumental decision. It’s the decision on whether or not you’ll have a positive attitude.

YOU get to decide that.

EVERYDAY!

ALL DAY!

If you’re like most people you probably never even give that decision a thought. You just allow your attitude to be determined by the people around you and the events of your day.

If you’re like most people your attitude “reflects.” The attitude of successful people “radiates.”

The most successful people decide that they, and they alone, will control their attitude. Nothing and no one will rob them of the incredible strength, focus, and energy provided by a positive attitude.  Sometimes they have to make that choice more than once a day, sometimes many times a day. But make it they do!

Attitude is contagious. It seems as if a negative attitude is the most contagious of all. The best antidote to a negative attitude is a decision. It’s a decision to choose, and choose positive.

It’s a decision that is yours and yours alone. All you have to do is make it!
